Horley Town vs Hendon WFC
2 - 1

Squad: Horton, Hughes (Noble), Birch, Stevens, Mackin, Cabey, Okunuga, K McIntosh, E McIntosh, Ademakinwa, Thomson (Weston)
Scorer: Thomson

For Hendon's first match of the new season they traveled down to Horley. Both teams started brightly, however Horley were the team to break the deadlock to make it 1-0 to the home side. Hendon fought back and strung passes fluently together and were creating chances left, right and centre; including Thomson coming one on one with the keeper but being unable to pass her and Okunuga hitting the post after a fantastic piece of play and pin point cross to her on the back post. Horley went 2-0 up when an unmarked attacker headed the ball home from a corner. With ten minutes left Thomson hit a screamer from 25 yards out; well beating the goalkeeper to make it 2-1. After the break Hendon continued to push and were unlucky not to score again when a free kick from Thomson nearly beat the keeper who did well to push it over her cross bar. E McIntosh also came close with a similar shot to that of Thomson's in the first half. The match finished 2-1 which is an obviously disappointing result to Hendon, hopefully next week they will gain their first win of the season as they enter the first round of the FA cup.

Goalkeeper Horton had an outstanding performance with a couple of fine saves that kept Hendon in the match.

St Joseph’s Youth v Hendon
2 - 0

Squad –Nadia M, Jade, Jennifer, Emily, Nadia D, Sophie, Shayni, Rosie, Abi, Ceri

After a strong finish at the end of last season, Hendon were up for their first competitive game of the new league campaign.

With a slightly new system of Jennifer holding between the midfield and defence, Hendon broke down St Joe’s with relative ease during the first 15 minutes.  Hendon seemed to have the majority of the possession yet couldn't’t capitalize on the finish and St Joe’s cleared their box well several times.

Against the run of play and catching Hendon on the break St Joe’s finally outnumbered our defence and were left with a one on one with Hendon’s keeper. Half Time 1-0.

Despite the goal Hendon were still leading on possession and playing some great football down the wings.  When necessary our defence stepped in and cleared the ball well, Abi once again making some brave saves and keeping a score turn around seem possible.  However with only a few minutes remaining Hendon were throwing everything at St Joe’s; Rosie, Jade, Emily and Jen all went close, yet tiredness was setting in and we seemed to be pushed off the ball a little too easily.  This eventually cost Hendon when St Joe’s intercepted a pass in our midfield and only Nadia and the recovering Ceri were left to deal with three attackers.  It was a great finish by their striker, but Hendon felt the final score did not do their performance justice.

A friendly in store against St Joseph’s Under 10’s next week

FA Cup 1st Round
Hendon WFC Vs Haringey 3 - 3
(Hendon win 5-4 on penalties)

Squad: Horton, E McIntosh, Birch, Stevens, Bennett (Mackin), Okunuga, K McIntosh (Hughes, Thomson (Noble), Cabey, Smith, Ademakinwa
Scorers: Tasha Ademakinwa, Michelle Smith Penalty Takers who scored: Lisa Noble, Tasha Ademakinwa, Ayo Okunuga, Jenni Birch, Ellie Hughes

Sunday 16th September saw Haringey travel to Hendon for the first round tie of the FA Cup. After a poor start in the league Hendon wanted to make amends with a good result in the cup tie. Hendon started off the better team with Ademakinwa slotting two goals past the opposing teams goalkeeper. However Haringey never gave up and managed to claw two goals back, raising their game and outperforming Hendon. The second half saw Michelle Smith score from a tight angle on the left wing to put Hendon ahead once more. However once again Haringey equalized to result the score at the end of normal time 3-3. After extra time the score ended 3-3 meaning penalties were the only way to result the tie. With both teams tired and having lost players to injury the tension was on. Lisa Noble stepped up first and she calmly powered the ball into the top right corner of the goal. Tasha Ademakinwa, Ayo Okunuga, Jenni Birch and Ellie Hughes all also converted their penalties and as Liz Horton the Hendon WFC goalkeeper saved Haringey's final penalty the relief of the end of a very physically and mentally demanding match was shown.

Hendon are through to the next round of the FA Cup.

Acton Sports Club Reserves v Hendon Reserves
6 – 0

Squad: Garden, E Blackaller (Jezierski), L Blackaller, Bello, Roberts, Pierides (Allwright), Chowdhury, Savoury, Clay, Copeland, Weston (Tierney),
Subs: Allwright, Jezierski, Tierney

First game of the season, I was hoping that despite some poor performances during pre season, the opportunity of securing three points might put a spring in the step of some of the players. Everyone briefed on their roles and responsibilities, there was a positive mood in the camp. The mood soon changed, we were 3-0 down inside the first ten minutes. Our inability in clearing our lines and the lack of tackles and aggression meant Acton was walking through us like we were invisible. You just can’t start a game like this. It took half an hour before we came to life – suddenly we looked interested and players began to communicate and compete. 4-0 down at half time. I mentioned pride and passion. A double substitution was made; I was looking for a response. To be fair I got one. We won a penalty early in the second half, Emma Blackaller – sidelined through injury was unable to take so Kelly Weston picked up the ball. A bad day at the office suddenly became wore as he blazed over. Any chances of getting back into the game were well and truly dead. The players remained up beat. Robo went up front, soon after and her never ay die attitude and running made a big difference. Suddenly we began creating chances. Jane Tierney hit a 20 yard dipping volley which the keeper tipped over and Charlotte Copeland had a one on one but shot straight into the keeper. Some pride salvaged but the game was lost in the first ten minutes. We have improved as individuals but until the players start believing into what is being asked then this result will happen again.

Player of the match: Robo

Heads up Hendon – we will get better.

Long Lane Vs Hendon WFC
2 - 2

Squad: Horton, Noble (Bennett), Birch, Stevens, Mackin, Okunuga, E McIntosh, Cabey (K McIntosh), Thomson, Smith, Ademakinwa Scorers: Tasha Ademakinwa, Michelle Smith

Hendon traveled to Long Lane looking for another win. Always a hard away game to travel to, Hendon started positively and rarely lost the ball. However a free kick outside the box that was floated in was met by a Long Lane head and powered into the back of the net. Hendon didn't let this affect them and continued to push up rarely giving the ball away and keeping Long Lane out of the penalty box. Only one shot by Long Lane worried Hendon, but Horton's strong arms pushed the ball up and over the cross bar. After trickery by Thomson in the oppositions penalty box, drawing players to her to try to win the ball, she freed Tasha Ademakinwa who took the ball onto her left foot and slotted it neatly away to bring the score level. Half time came and went and within a minute of the restart Michelle Smith scored and almost identical goal to that of which she scored last week from an almost impossible angle on the left wing. Hendon held almost all of the play and passed and moved well constantly looking threatening. The hardworking midfield did well to track back as well as attack and the defence was solid throughout. However Long Lane were gifted an opportunity which they greedily snatched to bring the score level once more.

The game finished 2-2 and Hendon will be disappointed not to have buried the match in a game which they dominated and had control of.

FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round
Hendon WFC Vs Petts Wood 1 - 4

Squad: Horton, E McIntosh (Roberts), Stevens (Cabey), Birch, Hughes (Saich), K McIntosh, Okunuga, Smith, Thomson, Noble, Ademakinwa
Scorer: Own Goal

Squandered chances in the first half and a string of defensive errors cost Hendon the match. Starting brightly, Hendon had the majority of the ball and Petts Woods' first goal was totally against the run of play. Clearly Hendon had been watching the Rugby World Cup as every shot soared high above the cross bar; even from close range. Petts Wood were kept in the lead by their keeper who made an amazing save from point blank range. Despite having the majority of play and chances Hendon were unable to claw their way back. Half time came with the score at 2-0. An inspiring team talk raised Hendon's spirits and the team came back onto the pitch eager to fight back and score some goals. Despite the positively within the camp Hendon went down two more goals. However a consolation goal was scored by a Petts Wood defender after persistent pressure from Ayo Okunuga.

Hendon who are now out of the FA Cup will now have to focus their sights on the league.

Enfield 3rds V Hendon WFC Reserves
2 - 3

Squad: E Blackaller, Bello, L Blackaller, Cobbin, Pierides (Jezierski), Copeland, Clay, Saich (Garden), Bianchi (Tierney), Roberts, Savoury
Subs: Tierney, Jezierski, Chowdhury, Garden
Scorers: Bianchi, Copeland, Roberts

No big warm up, no big team talk, it was fairly straight forward. We had a strong starting line up and I was hoping the players could deliver the goods. A brief team talk on communication, attacking the ball in the air, distance on clearances and not conceding in the first 15 minutes. The players delivered in all four areas.

We passed, moved and looked confident. We went 0 - 1 up after Cleggy played a lovely through ball for Charlie who was 1 v 1 with the keeper and showed great composure to give us the lead. The certainly gave us a boost and we went from strength to strength. Another great goal from Charlie twisting two defenders before slotting the ball nicely into the corner and a dodgy penalty from Robo meant we were 0 - 3 up at half time.

During the break I warned about complacency and overconfidence can come back to haunt you. I knew Enfield were going to come out all guns blazing and they did. The smiles on our faces were soon wiped off. We started poorly. Enfield managed to pull back two goals and we were hanging on towards the end but the team dug deep to gain our first victory.

2 - 3 winners in the end and a much needed confidence boost for us all. Well done to the team in general, especially the back four. The experience of Alison and Cleggy, the ability of Charlie and Caz and the no-nonsense displays from Annie, Laura and Robo made all the difference. Much better from Elena and Cheese too.

As a team you are 60% there. Still not enough tackles (no yellow cars) and not ruthless enough. On another day we would have lost this. Remember to be a winner you must be ruthless and stop whatever stand in your way or poses a threat.

Player of the match - Charlie Copeland.

Hendon Girls U13's v Brentford U13's
2 - 7

Squad: Gk (1st half) P Simao, (2nd half) Graham, W Simao, J Simao, Newing, Mabrouk, O'Donnell, Davis, Knell, Yates, Sherwood.

Hendon girls had tough opposition in Brentford as their first game to be played at 11 a side. Brentford won the toss and opted for the down hill slope in the first half and took very good advantage of this. A couple of balls over the top from the Brentford Goalie bounced over a relatively in experienced Hendon defence leaving the first half goalie (P Simao) with little chance to save. Hendon did manage to score in the first half however through Knell (making her Hendon debut) who shot from about 20 yards out and scored. At half time it was 1-4. Hendon were hoping to make the most of the slope in the second half but it was Brentford who scored first to take the score 1-5. Knell pulled it back to 2-5 a little while later and narrowly missed with a couple of other chances. Hendon were hopeful of pulling it back to 3-5 when they were awarded a penalty for a foul by Brentford. Knell stepped up but shot narrowly over the bar. From there Brentford went on to score two more goals and the game finished 2-7.

Player of the match was awarded to Sherwood, who also making her debut, covered much ground from her midfield position and put in an inspiring performance.

Hampstead v Hendon girls U13's
7 - 2

Squad: Graham (GK), P Simao, W Simao, J Simao, Newing, Sherwood (C), Mabrouk, Bolger, Davis, Knell, Starkey, O'Donnell.

Hendon's first away game of the season brought more tough opposition in Hampstead. The match started poorly for Hendon for conceded 4 goals in the first 20 minutes. Bad marking let Hendon down on all occasions with Hampstead picking up all the loose balls and being give time to shoot on goal. After the initial 20 minutes Hendon picked themselves up and started to pressure Hampstead much more. Starkey forced the goalie to make a save from a free kick on the edge of the area and Knell and Davis narrowly missed. In the end it was O'Donnell who scored from Hendon when she picked the ball up in Hampstead's box and turned and shot giving the keeper no chance. Davis then scored for Hendon when, having taken a corner, the ball came back to her on the edge of the box which she slotted in to the bottom left hand corner. Bolger making her debut also caused problems with her skill up front. Manager J Newing was confident that if the girls could keep pressuring Hampstead in the 2nd half they could pull back the 2 goal deficit. Unfortunately it was not to be. Hendon lapsed into not marking again and Hampstead scored 3 more goals to take the final score to 7-2. The player of the match award for Hendon went to Bolger who had a great debut and caused Hampstead a lot of problems with her trickery.

London Women V Hendon WFC
0 - 8

Squad: Horton, Hughes, Birch, Stevens, Mackin, Bennett, Saich (Fran), Cabey, Okunuga, Thomson, Ademakinwa
Scorers: Thomson (3), Ademakinwa (3), Birch, Okunuga

Hendon traveled to London Women hoping for their first win in the league this term; and they got their win with an impressive 8-0 thrashing over their rivals. It took twenty minutes but a break came when Thomson struck the ball into the back of the net as it broke free in the six yard box. London Women had barely touched the ball whereas Hendon were deservedly in the lead after stringing numerous passes together. After half hour Birch added to the score line by scoring direct from a corner curling the ball into the top corner out of reach of the keeper. Ademakinwa was next to score just before half time as she slotted the ball neatly away. Hendon had a shaky ten minutes within the first half but other than that they stayed strong throughout and didn't stop running for each other. The second half saw five more goals put away by Hendon. Thomson scored twice more as did Ademakinwa and Okunuga found herself on the score sheet too after Thomson won a penalty. With both strikers on fire netting hat tricks and the defence holding solid and keeping a clean sheet,

Hendon are feeling confident and hoping this is now the beginning of their season.

Long Lane Reserves v Hendon WFC Reserves
4 - 0

Squad: E Blackaller, L Blackaller, Cobbin, Pierides, Clay, Noble, Garden, Chowdhury (Tierney), Copeland, Bianchi, Roberts (Roberts),
Subs: Tierney, Rogers

The long journey meant a few of us were running late but not late enough for me to start making excuses. On paper we had a strong team, Cleggy and Lisa should of been a match for any central midfield pairing but unfortunately failed to find the right balance between defence and attack which meant we were constantly exposed. It was a poor first half from everyone and in midfield especially we looked tired and lazy. We created little and could not match our opponents.

The second half was better and we gave a decent account of ourselves but again - the game was lost at half time. The sooner we realize that a game lasts for 90 minutes the better. Concentration levels need to be at a maximum before you enter the pitch. If we start to focus prior to starting the game then we will not have to mountain to climb each week.

Friendly
Harrow St Mary's v Hendon Girls U13's
2 - 7

Squad: P Simao (GK), Newing, J Simao, Sherwood (C), W Simao, Mabrouk, Knell, Yates, Graham.

It was agreed to play 9v9 prior to the game (although Harrow only had 8 players). Another pitch on a hill and Hendon won the toss and elected to take the advantage in the first half. Hendon were hoping to get their first win of the season taking advantage of the extra player. However, it was Harrow who scored first directly from a corner. Hendon kept going though and in the first half Knell tried to take advantage of the space she was getting on the right wing. Hendon pulled it back to 1-1 through a goal by Graham. Harrow did not stop working however and scored from another corner in the first half when Hendon's marking was again poor. Hendon did manage to score two more goals though though Knell, one of which was played across goal into the bottom left hand corner. About 15 minutes into the game Hendon also lost their 1 player advantage when J Simao went off the pitch injured for a few minutes only to be rushed back on when Mabrouk's game was ended when she went over on her ankle. The score going into half time was 3-2 and the Hendon manager was concerned that Harrow would have the advantage of the slope in the second half. However the Hendon girls were magnificent and worked extremely hard with some excellent defending by Newing, Sherwood and J Simao and good goalkeeping from P Simao kept Harrow at bay. Great performances all round saw Hendon extend their lead when Knell, not long into the first half, scored with a fantastic shot about 20 yards out. Knell, not content with a hat trick, went on to score 2 more goals, one of which was even better that the 20 yard drive. This time from about 25 yards out Knell put the ball over the keeper who was off her line and into the top left corner. Graham got a second, another great shot from just outside the box, not long before the final whistle. Final score 2-7. Mention should also be made to Yates who was superb on the left, particularly in the second half and W Simao put applied a lot of pressure from the midfield. Player of the match was awarded two two players - Newing for a solid performance at the back and Knell for the superb performance in the middle which saw her score 5 goals. All the girls had a great game and did themselves, their parents and the manager proud.

Woking Vs Hendon WFC
2 - 2

Squad: Horton, Hughes (Saich) (Fran), Birch, Stevens, Mackin, Okunuga, Thomson, Cabey, E McIntosh (Bennett), K McIntosh, Ademakinwa
Scorers: Kirsten Thomson, Tasha Ademakinwa

The fourth match of the season saw Hendon traveling away from home for the third time, this time away at Woking. Woking are always worthy components especially when having to travel to them and play them on their own turf. They continued to prove that they are worthy opponents with a strong start to the match scoring two goals in quick succession early on. Fifteen minutes gone and 2-0 down Hendon knew they had to up their game before things got worse. Kirsten Thomson did just that as she received the ball on the left wing and following a quick run down the flank and cutting into the box she powered the ball home out of reach of the Woking keeper. With ten minutes of the half left Hendon won a free kick outside the box which Tasha Ademakinwa stepped up to take. The ball went in off the cross bar bringing Hendon on level terms. The half finished 2-2. The second half proved difficult for Hendon as they were constantly on the back foot, defending corners and keeper Liz Horton showing why she has the number 1 shirt with some fantastic saves. At the other end Hendon also had their chances with Ademakinwa missing a golden opportunity one on one with the keeper and a goal mouth scramble should have seen the ball put away on another occasion but it just wasn't to be. Although Hendon came home with a point they are disappointed to have dropped two which they feel if they had worked harder they may actually have won. Next week sees Hendon entertaining newcomers Littlehampton at home.

Another defeat but for the first time this season I come away from defeat actually pleased - strange?

For the first time I was actually getting what I wanted. A back 4 playing as a unit, full backs covering, midfielders working back and most importantly a determination to win the ball through sliding tackles. We played very well in the first half and went in 0 - 0. The defence - Annie, Laura, Robo and Elena were on form. We never looked like scoring either. All our hard work in the first half soon proved to be for nothing as a freak goal soon broke the deadlock. The Daggers forward managed to have enough strength to push through two defenders at the edge of the box before release a shot (well if you call it a shot - more of a pea roller) which Emma should have easily saved but sadly for us went straight through her legs - oops. I couldn't believe it. I can;t be too critical through as she is only a stand in keeper and doing a good job for the team. In reality their attacking should not be beating a lot of our players in the first place.

After that players seemed to give up. Something which I will not tolerate. I decided to go for broke and switch to three at the back and add another striker but Annie, Laura and Elena could only hold out for so long. No one was tracking back and we got caught on the counter.

Many positives in the game, still missing a few players. If we can take our first half display into our next game and build on that then we will progress slowly but surely.

After last weeks excellent first half display I really wanted the players to use that as a platform to build from, both in terms of confidence and attitude. Did they respond? Yes. We managed to clock up our second win of the season and also keep our first clean sheet. It was a strange kind of game as Enfield started with 9 players. I stressed how important it was to apply early pressure and try and get a lead as we knew they had other players on the way. The trouble with this was that their was increasing pressure on us to score. The goal did not come until the 35th minute when the excellent Jane floated in a lovely cross for Robo to knock in with her knee. It was her second goal of the season and not bad for a left back. The second half began with both teams highly motivated with eleven players, this meant we had to re-focus and work even harder. We managed to hold out for a 1 - 0 win, a clean sheet and a very impressive display in which players showed guts, determination and inner strength to hold out. For the first time I was actually proud of them. The back four - Robo, Laura, Annie and Elena player superb and Jane making her first start certainly answer a few questions for me. It was a day for the team. Well done everyone.

Not much to say - game plan was to go first twenty without conceding; failed to do that. Was 1 - 0 down after eleven minutes and eventually went down 6 - 0. Second to every ball, off the pace, no tackles, no leadership, no inspiration, no will to want to achieve, no ambition. Just a few things that spring to mind on this performance.

In my pre match briefing I spoke to the players regarding our games in hand and that despite being 3 games unbeaten in the league, they needed to step up and start gaining maximum points in order to the climb the table. We started the game very brightly, Barbara having the a couple of great chances early on but our inability to strike a decent shot meant we could not convert our chances. This was the story of the whole match and Charlie was also guilty of shooting straight at the keeper from a one on one situation. Despite looking so comfortable in this game, I could not help feeling "the longer this went on, the more chance we would lose." It was a typical display from us. The defence was as strong as ever, the tackles too - much to the astonishment of Panthers. Maybe they should take up another sport - they were falling over like dominoes. For a team third in the table they could not handle our physical nature nor our long spells of possession. Yet despite all this they managed to take a surprise lead when Cheese ms-judged a free kick and dropped it right at the feet of the opposing striker. It was a shock to us all. With only ten minutes left, we went all out attack. Super sub Jane - again, showing she has a lot to offer twisted and turned before delivering the ball into the box for Kelly to tap in for her first of the season. Minutes after, Charlie was sent racing clear, she managed to keep her cool and slot past the keeper and give us a 1 - 2 lead. Despite one last attack from Panthers and Ani making an impressive goal-line clearance with her head we hung on to win 1 - 2.

Panthers - lol more like pussy cats. We look forward to the return so you can experience more from the lean, mean Greens.

What was suppose to be a first in a long line of home games for us ended up being switched to our opponents ground due to a waterlogged pitch.  It never really made a difference to me as I was looking forward to a stronger test against a ‘first team’ and was hoping that the incentive of a semi final would get the players up for the game.

The game itself was frustrating, defensively we were not at our best, we rushed and panicked in our efforts to clear the ball time and time again, players wondered out of position and our effort in general was not good enough as we were second to every ball.  We eventually managed to score when a great piece of trickery from Cleggy sent Kelly down the line for her to cross for Tash to turn a shot past the keeper, it was a great move and to be honest the only good thing we did in the first half, coming in 1 up at half time did not reflect on the amount of good chances we had, If Tash had a right foot she would be unstoppable but 1-0 it was.  Was I content, no.

A hammering at half time knocked some life into a few of them, Elena, Tash, Laura and Alison led by example with the tackles, Liz remained comfortable in goal throughout, good handling and kicking and for once she never got lobbed – lol.  Tash managed 2 more in the second half, thanks mainly to my inspired substitution of shirts, she looked much more comfortable in her favoured no 8 shirt.  3 goals for her but could of easily been more, shame she is so reluctant to use the right foot.  Lisa completing a full 90 minutes looked impressive and her vision and range of passing was often the difference, she was also given the player of the match.  We eventually ran out 3-1 winners, we were expected to win and we did, satisfied – fairly.

Semi finals now – who knows , belief, belief, belief, or just pack up and go home now.
